Cleft Lip & Palate Repair
Cleft lip is a common congenital birth defect that affects thousands of children each year. Cleft lip may occur alone or in conjunction with cleft palate and cause mild or severe disfigurement. Pediatric plastic surgery to correct a cleft lip can be performed anytime after birth and treatment should begin sooner rather than later to avoid further complications.
Congenital Limb Surgery
Plastic surgery can effectively correct many hand malformations and provide better functionality. Such hand malformations including, webbed, crooked or extra fingers, children born with no thumbs or short fingers, can receive successful treatment from pediatric plastic surgery.
Macrostomia
Children diagnosed with cleft can suffer the affects of associated nasal deformity. These malformations can pose obvious cosmetic problems as well as serious impaired nasal airflow issues as a result of this lip or nasal deformation. A consultation with Dr. Rex Moulton-Barrett can educate parents of these patients on pediatric plastic surgery procedures that may benefit their child.
Microtia Ear Reconstruction
Certain ear malformations such as Microtia causes malformed or missing ears and can be associated with severe hearing defects. A skilled plastic surgeon should work in conjunction with the primary care physician to plan the treatment for reconstruction of the ear lobe. Rib cartilage is commonly required to form a new ear framework and definitive reconstruction may take place at about age 5 or 6 years when rib growth has been adequate.
