Fat Grafting

Fat Grafting in Oakland, San Francisco Bay Area, and Walnut Creek California

Fat grafting or fat transfer is one of the most advanced treatments available for individuals looking to minimize creases and wrinkles. The procedure utilizes the patient’s own supply of fat during autologous fat implants to smooth out areas of the body and face. Patients experiencing fat loss from aging or defects and scarring from trauma may find this process to be an excellent option. Since the process uses the patient’s own fat resources, there is little risk of rejection and no chance of experiencing an allergic reaction as can be found with other injectables.

Facial Fat Graftin Procedure

The process of fat grafting can be performed by Dr. Moulton-Barrett on an outpatient basis using local anesthetic, as long as more substantial processes are not concurrently being done. Autologous fat implants are commonly done to augment the lips or cheeks, rejuvenate one’s face or correct problem areas such as acne scars or hollowness around one’s eyes. Some patients use the procedure to address problem areas on the back of the hands or with their breasts or buttocks.

Fat Injections for Wrinkle Reduction

The procedure involves liposuctioning fat from an area of the body rich with fat, such as the abdomen or thighs. The fat is sterilized and processed before a small needle injects the fat into the treatment area. The fat is then injected into muscle tissue to maximize results. This way the fat receives nourishment from blood vessels, which are found in high concentration in muscular areas. Autologous fat implants usually take 30-60 minutes to perform, and may be done with other procedures such as lipoplasty or face lifts.

Patient Experience: Fat Grafting

Patients rarely experience significant pain following this procedure, and Tylenol with codeine is usually adequate for relieving discomfort. Patients can expect some bruising, swelling and soreness at the donor and treatment sites. Results will usually be visible after the swelling fully subsides, in three to four months. Some patients experience their implants dissipating to a degree over time, with their system reabsorbing some fat, particularly in situations with insufficient blood supply. In general, however, fat grafting is a low-risk and permanent solution to address many cosmetic issues.
